5 Easy Birthday Cake Ideas

Here’s some great inspiration for birthday cakes for boys and girls that are quick and easy to decorate. They all look fantastic, and will have your children squealing with delight, as well as sticking their fingers in to the icing and sneaking a lolly or two off the top. When you’re short on time but want a cake that still looks beautiful and special, try these birthday cake ideas.

Rainbow cupcakes

Just like most children, we have a thing for rainbows too! And these easy-to-make rainbow cupcakes are a winner for birthday parties and sending to kindy or school.

You’ll need:

Cupcakes

Blue icing

Small white marshmallows

Rainbow Sour Straps

What to do:

  1. Cover each cupcake with blue icing.
  2. Cut the Sour Straps to about 7 cm long or to a length that fits the size of your cupcakes and the height of your rainbow (though not too high).
  3. Position the Sour Straps into each side of the cupcake and surround the base of the rainbow with marshmallows.

2. Kit Kat and Smartie cake

Surrounded by chocolate and topped with colourful lollies, this is an uber impressive cake for kids of any age.

You’ll need:

A round cake in the size you choose

Kit Kats (enough to surround your cake)

Smarties (or M&Ms)

Icing of any colour

Ribbon

What to do:

  1. Cover the cake with icing
  2. Stand individual sticks of Kit Kat up on the side of the cake (they will stick to the icing)
  3. Tie the ribbon around the cake
  4. Fill the top with Smarties.

You’ll need:

Chocolate cake

Chocolate icing

Chocolate Flake bars

Toy trucks

What to do:

  1. Cut a section out of the cake
  2. Drizzle the cake with chocolate icing
  3. Sprinkle the cake with broken up Flake bars
  4. Position trucks around the ‘construction site’.

Cake of your choice

White icing

Musk sticks

Heart of butterfly sprinkles

  3. Tie the ribbon around the cake
  4. Sprinkle the top with butterflies or hearts.

You’ll need:

Watermelon

Rockmelon

Blueberries

Strawberries

Kiwi fruit

Grapes

Cookie cutters

Toothpicks

What to do:

  1. Cut the watermelon to your desired cake shape
  2. Cut the rockmelon into slices and cut out your chosen shapes with cookie cutters and place on top of watermelon
  3. Slice strawberries and kiwifruit
  4. Arrange all fruit decoratively on the watermelon using toothpicks to fasten where you need to.
